Carrick
A coal steamer bound for Chile that was abandoned in December 1896. The sources disagree about how and where she was lost.
The story
The Carrick left Newcastle for Valparaiso with 1,471 tons of coal. Heritage Victoria says she began taking water and her pumps became choked with coal dust, so the crew abandoned ship and went on to Twofold Bay.
A New Zealand paper, the Feilding Star of 28 December 1896, says she struck an unknown object, leaked, and went down about 350 miles south-east of Cape Howe.
Where the records differ:
Cause and place: pumps choked with coal dust and lost off Cape Howe (Heritage Victoria), or struck an unknown object and lost about 350 miles south-east of Cape Howe (Feilding Star).
Archive photographs for this wreck are being gathered and will be added here.
