SS Riverina
A Huddart Parker steamer carrying Tasmanian apples that ran ashore near Tullaberga Island in 1927. She was abandoned and later used for RAAF target practice.
The story
The Riverina left Hobart for Sydney with a large cargo of apples and general freight. She met gale-force winds and heavy seas with almost no visibility and ran ashore on a beach near Tullaberga Island.
Salvage attempts failed, and the ship was stripped of valuables and abandoned. During World War II the wreck was used as a target for RAAF aerial practice.
Where the records differ:
Cause: a squall (secondary list) or poor visibility in a gale (Heritage Victoria).
Archive photographs for this wreck are being gathered and will be added here.
